So far hydrogen is stored as a compressed gas or liquified. There is a lot of research around storing hydrogen in metal hydrides. The breakthrough described in the 5 July 2020 article in the Sydney Morning Herald from labs in Australia at University of New South Wales UNSW looks particularly promising and nearer term than many.
